The following performance suggestions are to help in developing this arrangement into a rewarding piece of music. You will get a great deal of flexibility in this combo chart. Feel free to organize the arrangement in any way you like with regard to soloists and percussion breaks.
This tune is what I call “island music.” It is a calypso and is medium in tempo. The arrangement is written so it may be used as a lead sheet by playing the Trpt. Alto, Tenor, and Trombone parts, or playing the Trpt. 2nd Alto, 2nd Tenor, and 2nd Trombone resulting in a complete arranged presentation with harmonized parts. This type of chart has a great deal of value in the way it is arranged. You actually get two charts in one. One lead sheet and one with full harmony and interest in the lines.
The solo sections are well defined, and you may choose to play part of the head between the solos as a sort of interlude. This chart creates exciting musical energy –it is fun to play and is certainly performable by your players. It is not difficult and is very instructive in this style. Have fun with Calypsos.
