Rehearsal Techniques – Audible Intelligence Music – AIM Success! There are many different ways to run a rehearsal as there are people leaving bands. Sometimes people though the struggle with what would be the most efficient way to run rehearsal. I have watched many people teaching them seen many different techniques be affective. There’re some techniques that seemed to consistently be effective at keeping classroom management under control and keeping kids involved. The main thing is to keep the pace of the class moving along. If there are some downtimes or really slow times students minds will wander and they will start getting into mischief. I have found that it is best to keep everyone involved as much as possible. Many band directors will work with one section for an extended time while the others are sitting there not participating. I tried to avoid this at all cost. By designing a full curriculum for band. I put together the beginning banned book in the zone. It is a complete beginning band method book. This helps give you a tool to use to keep covering all areas of music and have it readily available. You’re not having to stop and go to the cupboard and get another worksheet out or another book out for the students to use. Everything is right in front of them. The skill builder section in the book is purposefully made to keep the children’s attention in the game. It is like a basketball player who is sitting on the bench. They need to be paying attention to the game so when they are involved are put onto the court they know how they’ve the game is going and they can join right in and not lose pace. With the band book in the zone the students have a call in response section at the beginning of each unit while they’re resting they will be listening to somebody else playing their part. I preferred to have at a good example being played for them when they first start. This is not for them to copy and not know how to do things themselves. Throughout this book they have to do more approving of their abilities than in any other curriculum available today. Rehearsal Techniques – Audible Intelligence Music – AIM Success! In this instance I like them to hear the tone that they are going striving for. I will play an example by playing lime aid so they know what they’re striving for. If you have a student who’s playing off key and with poor quality leading that the the group will not be progressing towards an advanced sound at the proper rate. I will use it in advance to student or myself to demonstrate this for the students and I find that they begin to emulate my tone quality. This is crucial to develop the tone quality. It is not a good technique to just describe the tone quality and expect the kids to know what that would sound like. Rehearsal Techniques – Audible Intelligence Music – AIM Success!
So as we practice the beginning exercises I will play and I have them answer me by playing wine be. This also works well with articulation and musicality. It is hard to explain to a student how to play in a particular style when they could listen to it in hear what that style sounds like. After they have developed for a while you can start having a different individual student or sec. play the top part as the lead. It’s interesting that if you have sometimes have the clarinets lead they will tend to be still low on the pitch because of their lack of strength of there on the shirt. This is a great way to show them the difference. When they hear themselves they will notice that their pitch is not where everyone else’s does. This is usually a changing point for my students when they realize that they need to use the plenty of air and have a proper embouchure so that they can be on pitch with the rest the ensemble. Throughout this beginning section and it it works great because everyone is involved at all times even though I may want to listen to the clarinets I could have the clarinets play line a and I could have the rest of the band play lined be. This way I can focus on the issues in the clarinet section and help them while the rest of the class is still participating and learning and progressing in their skills. It is important to keep things moving. The only issue is is that you can also not just have them keep playing all the time we stop to clap and count the rhythms.
And we will have some times of discussing theoretical concepts. Rehearsal Techniques – Audible Intelligence Music – AIM Success! I try to keep this in a game like system so that they will stay actively involved and will be realizing that they may be called on so that they need to be paying attention. I even tried to keep this portion of the class moving along quickly so that people do not check out mentally and not benefit from this. Then I usually fall up the class action with some time practicing their concert songs or performance material. During this time sometimes we will just do a play a run-through and not fix anything. Sometimes sometimes you want to stop and working clean things up and other times you want to give them a chance to see what the entire work is like. And then fix something. Often I will just fix things while they’re playing if we’re practicing at jazz band song and they’re playing their staccato notes too long I will just indicate with my hand or with with words what I would like them to do if I would like them to be more detached if I’d like them to be longer or somebody is missing a slur I don’t always stop the group I will sometimes just say remember to get your slurs in there and we’re able to fix it on the fly. Too often band directors will lose the focus of the children by not being aware of the mental state that the kids are in. This also depends on the time of day and the weather. You need to be able to read your class and keep them all involved at all times. Rehearsal Techniques – Audible Intelligence Music – AIM Success!
