You will have a wide range of students that enter your classroom. Some will have music experience. Some will already know how to play an instrument. Others will already have several years of piano study under their belts. There will also be students that have no musical knowledge at all. It is important to have a curriculum that will insure that all of the students will learn the basic concepts without any gaps in their learning. There is a new band curriculum that is available from Audible Intelligence Music. The beginning band method book, In The Zone was written by Nikki Crathorne, Al Gemberling, and Joe Covill. They are music educators that were determined to help bridge the gap from public school band classes to the college experience. Other beginning band method books do not contain a full curriculum. The beginning band method book, In the Zone has ten progressive units that address each basic skill needed to be a successful musician. Each skill is presented, practiced, reviewed, and applied to the music. There are performance skills, music theory skills, rhythm skill, and all are applied to join together to help students advance in their musical studies. There are books available for all of the standard concert band instruments. The percussion book is offered as separate drum and mallet books or as a combined book, whichever is the best fit for a given program. Most concert bands have a percentage of people that are lacking skill in some area. With the In the Zone beginning band method books, every student needs to perfect each skill before they can progress to the next level. The performance skills include long tone exercises that will help each individual musician develop their quality of sound and therefore help the entire concert band to have a more mature tone quality. There are exercises that help with flexibilities and slurs to help develop the students embouchures and agility around their instruments. The next area of Study is the technique section. The students learned to Master and exercise and then they keep going faster and faster so they can practice getting their fingers and articulations to lineup. There’re number of areas of study in the three section and they progress over all 10 levels in the book. The first area in each unit is no reading. The notes studied in this unit are the ones that are used in that unit for that instrument. They review reading not just whole notes with notes of all values so that they can recognize notes whether they have colored in note heads or open notepads. Next a study key signatures. They learned the order of the flats in the first unit. In the next unit they go on to learn the order of the sharps then they have a mixture of both sharp and flat keys. Then they learned how to determine what key signature each key represents. By the end of the book they will learn how to create a scale from a given key signature. There’s a section on Time signatures in each level of the book pause. They learn how to determine how many beads are in any given time signature and what kind of B12 what kind of note will receive a beat. It’ll also learn how to write the correct number of beats and subdivisions in a given manager. There are lessons on the terms and symbols that will help the students reinforce their knowledge of dynamics articulations and temple markings as well as normal symbols that will be found in the music. They have one of the areas that is unique to this book is the presentation of transpositions. Most books do not teach students how to transpose for their instrument. This beginning band method book not only teaches the students to transpose for their instruments but they learn how to transpose for all of the other instruments as well. This is very helpful if students want to be able to write music one day for a group of instruments. They will need to know what key each instrument is in. It will need to know how to transpose the notes so that they can all sound the pictures that they’re looking for. There is a section in each unit the covers the piano keyboard. Even though all of the students will not play the piano they will learn how the piano keyboard works and what the names of the different notes are. There will first learn the white keys. Then they will learn all of the notes with sharps. Then they will learn all the notes and flats. They will after this realize that that some notes have her all notes have more than one name when they can visualize it on the keyboard it makes it much more understandable then if they’re trying to understand it on their instrument. They will learn the difference enharmonic names for the different notes. This will help them when they’re trying to learn new scales or new notes on their instrument. This also help with their trying to learn how to make different scales. After they finish this section they get to the rhythm studies. Rhythm is very important so it is emphasized extra in this method book. There’re three parts to this. There’s one section that they can play on their instruments or clapping counsel or play on a drum or whatever they choose. They’re then two different kinds of exercises where they have to apply their risk rhythmic knowledge. Rhythm is approach from many different angles to ensure that the students have a firm understanding of it from all angles. Next field and practice checks to make sure that they are completing everything and applying what they have learned.
