Developing sight reading skills is one of the most challenging things that the director will face. If students are able to sight read it is a good indication that they have a strong understanding of all of the basic concepts of music. To be a good site reader students need to be able to read notes very quickly. Sometimes music is going along at a very fast tempo instance will be up will need to be able to read those notes at a very rapid pace. Students also need to have a strong understanding of rhythm. They need to know all the different kinds of notes and how long each note last. It needs to be fluent or they will not be able to sight read smoothly. If they’re having to figure things out as they go it will make their sight reading not very smooth. Also they need to have a good understanding of key signatures. If they don’t understand key signatures they will be playing wrong notes. They will not know which notes are flat or sharp and They will proceed to play in the wrong key. The student will also need to understand time signatures. Especially in more difficult passages there are often changes in meter. One of the top resources for developing excellence in sight reading is be in the zone band method book. This is the top beginning band method black available today. Most beginning band method books just have a series of songs in them. This beginning band method book has a systematic approach that has 10 levels of study that are progressive and developed throughout the curriculum. Air is really no other band curriculum available today. This curriculum is the most complete tool that is available to be experienced teacher. Most banned method books just have the students play through some songs and hope that they develop their skills. The concert bands that use this band about the back I have expressed tremendous success and development and their students. The national standards are often a challenge for band directors to be able to verify what they have done. With this curriculum of in the zone it is very easy to evaluate where each student is at and monitor their progress. Once the student has completed out a unit you know that they have covered all of the areas presented in the book. This book has more review of the basic concepts and an any other that is available on the market. Students start out with just a few notes and a few rhythms. They have different doctors checks that require them to review these until their master. They then proceed to a theory section make sure that they’re covering note reading rhythm counting and performance and many other important theoretical basics. Students learn how to trans pose for all of the different instruments. This way if the teacher wants to play a specific and note the students will know what notes they need to plate sound on the same concert pitch. I don’t know of any other books on the market to discuss how to transpose for your instrument. This band method also presents exercises in a variety of key signatures. It starts out with just five note scale so that we’ll not be at range problem for any instruments. It extends to different keys in the five note scale then progress is full scales and a variety of keys. Students have to learn terms that are used commonly in music. They’ll learn dynamics and all the terms for the dynamics. He learned about tempo and tempo markings. They also learn about accents and different start types of articulations. Students also and up and learning about the piano keyboard. It is very important that all students can visualize in their mind a piano keyboard. It’s this will help them to learn how to transpose and to understand and harmonic tones. This can also help them understand how scales are formed and households tips and half steps are created. If they just use their instrument it can become very abstract and hard for them to understand. There’re also sections the cover music manuscript. It is helpful for the students to understand how music is written so that they can read it more clearly. Students learn which side of the note to head a stem should be on determining if the note is the stem is going up or down. They learn which side of the stem of flag is on. There’s also a section on time signatures. It is important for the students to understand what kind of note will receive a beat in different time signatures it is important for the students to know how to count in any given time signature. It is also important that students understand how one note relates to another within that time signature. At the end of each unit the students learn a little bit about a composer. They read a short bit about them and then they answer questions. At the very end they Will compose a short excerpt to show that they understand how to write the right amount of beats in a given time signature. They’re encouraged to write notes that they’re able to play on their own instrument. Once a student has finished her unit there are pages in the director’s block that shows them how to test the students to see if they have learned all that they should and that unit. In our classes we circle anything in the theory units of the student was missed and they need to go back and fix it until everyone has gotten everything correct in the unit. Although this take some reviewing for some students you end up making sure that every student understood every concept in the unit. Sometimes it works well to let students work at their own pace. I have students and very in what level they’re on. Sometimes we’ll get a new student to our school and I have them start at the beginning well some of the classmates maybe in unit seven.
