Well it’s summertime. Many band directors are just relaxing from their final concerts. Graduations are over. Pomp and circumstance goes back into the folder in the file cabinet. After a bit of time goes by and we get together ourselves and rest. We need to start thinking of our plan of attack for the next school year. We wonder how can we get our basic concepts and mastered even more thoroughly so that we can attain higher levels of performance in our performing groups. From marching bands to concert bands. From jazz bands to pet bands. From the music class to the music history. From theory to manuscript. From orchestra to choir. There is a need for basic skills to be learned. All students need to learn the basic foundation of music to be able to perform at higher level. Are you wanting your group to perform better? Are you wanting your students to be able to sight read better? Are you been wanting to have your groups be better rhythm counters. If so, you may want to look at what band a method book you were using. There’re many different approaches that can be taken. A lot of them require a lot of preparation for the teachers. You can just try to teach her classes and hope that you cover all the basics. This method makes a little bit difficult to tell if each student your class is actually understanding the concepts presented. Often we of students of different levels with in one classroom. Some students might already have a thorough understanding of a certain concept while others have never even heard of it. There is one method black that is outstanding at helping with all of these issues. Not many people are aware of this offering yet but it will soon be nationally known. The new beginning band method book in the zone has 10 progressive levels that cover each of the basic skills needed to grow as a musician. The class can work on them together or students can work on their own level. Everyone can start out the beginning and as you get new students they can start out at the beginning while others are more dance level. The skills that are covered help out in always of playing. It helps from the playing of the instrument through the understanding of the theory involved. In order to develop completely there needs to be in learning. This method helps match the national standards in America the national standard requirements are often hard to quantify but with the in the zone band method book students can do their work and teachers can Grade and prove what the students of that. They’re able to use this beginning band method book in a way that is extremely helpful to their future. This band method book is not just for beginners it has many warm-ups and exercises that will help students of any level. Each exercise that is to be played on the instrument has practice checks about it the students are supposed to play through each exercise in a sec. One time when they do this they are encouraged to clap and count the exercise and they’re encouraged to sing the exercise well saying there note names and doing their fingerings they could also use sole footage at this point. My choir classes have greatly improved their sight reading skills by singing these exercises in selfish. This book could be used as a choir curriculum and they could just sing insulted. So after each exercise is clapped and sung the student should then played the exercise on their instrument. This all counts as one practice check once the whole section is completed the students are to go back and do the section again and each time they review it there today to improve something they should be paying special attention to their on the sure they’re playing position in their hand position as well. They should be working on their tone quality in the use of air and they should be paying close attention to the articulations and dynamics that are presented. The first few exercises aren’t a section that is called skilled builders. This action is specifically created to help fill the gap for the students who do not take private lessons. During private lesson special attention is paid to work on long tones and basic slurs and flexibility’s. Scale sections are also included here. Students should work on using their air stream efficiently and strive to use the least amount of tension as possible. This band method allows students to experience some of the things that they would normally experience during their private lessons. When they work on the next section that has the look flexibility’s they are working on developing fluidity in their playing in able being able to maneuver around the instrument. When they do the slower slurs they’re spending time developing there on the sure muscles so that they will have the endurance needed to succeed in playing along works of music. When they get to the part on technique it is nice that they will start that section at a very slow tempo and make sure that they are getting the coordination between their tongue and their fingers. They should then slowly speed up the metronome marking until they can complete the exercise faster and faster while maintaining the accuracy that they were doing at a slower tempo. The students will start out with a very small range so that they can work on identifying the notes and rhythms and maintaining proper breath support and articulation. Once they have mastered one unit they can then continue to the next unit which will just have a little bit of expansion to an to the range. After they do the playing section they will need to proceed to the theory section. The theory section as a broad assortment of act of worksheets and challenges that will help the students understand a very variety of theoretical concepts.
