Description
Viking Voyage is a multi-level middle school band work that has three sections: a moderately slow introduction, a faster second section with new melodic material, and a return to the first theme. The melodic source of the composition came from a traditional Icelandic folk song. The driving rhythmic pulse, (5/4 and 4/4 meters) dissonant chords, and drone like melodies paint a musical picture of the ancient Viking world. Delicate solo sections (Solo Clarinet and Solo Flute) are contrasted by explosive full band sections. This relatively short composition explores a wide range of textures and is sure to transport both student performers and audiences on a musical Viking Voyage.
