Statement for Elson – David Jarvis

Description

Statement for Elson is a short solemn musical epitaph for unaccompanied trumpet in memory of Washington State University president Elson Floyd.  The entire melodic content was constructed from his name: A/E/B/G/F for Elson and Bb/E/G/F/Ab for Floyd.  The opening and closing of the work, only two notes are heard: E/F, which of course represents his initials. The work was premiered by Dr. David Turnbull at the Festival of Contemporary Art Music in March of 2016.
